Nurse call systems by capability
Nurse call systems now do far more than light a lamp above a door. Depending on system and configuration, they route calls to mobiles, run workflows, register staff presence and feed reporting. We map each capability so you can see what applies to your facility.

Seven capabilities, one system
Pick the capability you are weighing up. Each explains what it does in general terms and links to the provider page where we cover it in depth. Austco Healthcare is the provider featured today.
Communication
At its core, a nurse call system carries a request from a patient or resident to the right staff member, with audible and visual indication. IP platforms such as Tacera add voice, displays and configurable call types on one network, depending on system and configuration.
Mobility
Calls and events can be sent to caregivers' handsets, so staff receive and respond while moving through the facility instead of walking back to a panel. Which alerts reach which device depends on the system and how it is configured.
Workflow
Nurse call can run routine work as well as alarms. Workflow buttons, timers, staff presence and routing rules send each request to the team that handles it. Some platforms extend this into selected EMR/EHR workflows.
Location
Real-time location badges can register staff presence in a room and cancel a call automatically when a caregiver arrives. Austco positions its RTLS as working alongside Tacera, adding location-aware events and reporting.
Duress
Staff duress and emergency calls let a caregiver raise help from wherever they are on the floor. Where the selected system and configuration support it, the alert carries that staff member's location to responders.
Bedside to handset
Where a call begins
Nurse call systems are physical before they are digital. Four points in a facility decide whether a call is easy to make and quick to see.
At the bedside
The patient's handset or call point starts every request. Its layout, reach and how easily it can be cleaned matter in daily use, especially for patients with limited mobility.
In the ensuite
Bathrooms carry urgent calls in harsh conditions. ACT Health's nurse call specification, for example, requires IP65 certification for call stations in ensuites and common bathrooms.
In the corridor
Dome lights, displays and nurse station screens show who is calling and how urgent it is. On an IP system, the same event can also reach a phone and a report.
In a caregiver's hand
Mobile alerts move the call to the person, not the person to the panel. In aged care, where staff cover long wings and shared lounges, that can change how a shift is organised.
